Dr Ilene K. Gipson Receives Arvo's Prestigious Friendenwald Award

 

Ilene K. Gipson Receives ARVO's Prestigious Friendenwald Award presented annually for outstanding research in the basic or clinical sciences as applied to ophthalmology.

Ilene K. Gipson, Ph.D., Ocular Surface Scholar and Senior Scientist at the Schepens Eye Research Institute, and Professor of Ophthalmology, Harvard Medical School,  received the prestigious Friedenwald Award in May 2007. This award was presented by the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) annually to one of its 12,000 members for outstanding research in the basic or clinical sciences as applied to ophthalmology.

Dr. Gipson, who is also Executive Committee Chair of  Women's Eye Health.org, was honored for her seminal contributions to basic and clinical understanding of wound healing, epithelial anchorage and mucin biology in the areas of ocular surface and cornea research.   She received her award on May 8, 2007 at the annual ARVO meeting in Fort Lauderdale, FL, at which time she gave the award lecture entitled “The Ocular Surface: The Challenge to Enable and Protect Vision.”
