Dr. Dana receives prestigious Chancellor's Award from LSU

Institute Co-Director of Research and Senior Scientist, Reza Dana, M.D., M.P.H., M.Sc. is the recipient of the 2012 Chancellor's Award in Neurosciences and Ophthalmology from Louisiana State University (LSU) Health Sciences Center School of Medicine at New Orleans. The award was presented on Friday, February 3 by Prof. Nicolas Bazan, Chair of Research at LSU, who stated “The Chancellor’s Award in Neuroscience  from the Louisiana State University School of Medicine has been awarded to  prestigious scientists for their contributions and academic leadership. The Award lecture   was inaugurated by Nobel laureate Francis Crick, in 1995, who uncovered the DNA double  along with  James Watson. Since then, several others including twelve other Nobel laureates  have presented this award lecture.”

Dr. Dana presented the Chancellor's Award Lecture in Neuroscience and Ophthalmology titled From "Bench to Bedside": Recent Discoveries in the Immunopathogenic Mechansims of Corneal and Ocular Surface Inflammatory Disorders

profs_dana_bazan.pngAccording to Prof. Bazan (pictured at left presenting the award to Dr. Dana), “Dr. Reza Dana's lecture was attended by faculty, fellows and students and was very well received.” In his abstract for the presentation, Dr. Dana states that "significant advances have been made in the past decade in better understanding the cellular and molecular immunopathogenesis of a variety of cornea and ocular surface inflammatory disorders, including dry eye disease, corneal allograft rejection, and corneal angiogenesis. As a result of these discoveries, several novel targets have been identified and validated in preclinical models of disease, with some already through clinical validation. This presentation will present some relevant data from the bench with applicable clinical translations."

Drs. Nicolas and Haydee Bazan hosted a dinner in honor of Dr Dana; an event attended by academic officers, ophthalmologists and  community leaders of New Orleans.

In addition to his roles at Schepens, Dr. Dana holds the Claes H. Dohlman Chair in Ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School. He is Director of the Cornea & Refractive Surgery Service at the Mass. Eye & Ear, and serves as the Vice Chairman of the Harvard Department of Ophthalmology and Associate Chief of Ophthalmology for Academic Programs at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary
