A message from the President
World Sight Day
October 9, 2008
The World Health Organization (WHO) and the
International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB), through
their joint initiative VISION 2020 have declared October 9, 2008 World Sight Day. The mission of VISION 2020 is the elimination of avoidable blindness and to give everyone the "Right to Sight".
The focus of this years effort is Eyes on the Future - fighting vision impairment in later life. Statistically, 75% of blindness is avoidable and 80% of blind people are over 50 years of age. Schepens Eye Research Institute has made tremendous progress in developing new cures for macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, other types of retinal and optic nerve degenerations and damage, dry eye, and eye tissue transplants. We have also made great strides in the development of new technologies—new lenses and devices—to help those with low vision make the absolute most out of the vision they have until we can reverse vision loss. These advances not only make a tremendous impact on blindness, but also yield wider benefits beyond the eye, opening new avenues for treatment of cancer, diabetes and other major diseases.
Schepens supports and applauds the effort of VISION 2020. To increase awareness of this event, we are installing banners in downtown Boston. Please look for our campaign and support the work of VISION 2020 and Schepens Eye Research Institute.
