Research Projects

Epithelial mucins are a heterogeneous group of heavily O-glycosylated glycoproteins found as major protective components of all mucosal epithelia. The major focus of my research is:

  1. To characterize the carbohydrate portion of the mucins expressed by the ocular surface epithelia, as well as the enzymes involved in their biosynthesis.

  2. To determine whether alteration of mucin glycosylation is associated with ocular surface disease.

  3. To determine the contribution of mucin carbohydrates to the integrity of the mucosal barrier.
