Epithelial mucins are a heterogeneous group of heavily O-glycosylated glycoproteins found as major protective components of all mucosal epithelia. The major focus of my research is:
-
To characterize the carbohydrate portion of the mucins expressed by the ocular surface epithelia, as well as the enzymes involved in their biosynthesis.
-
To determine whether alteration of mucin glycosylation is associated with ocular surface disease.
-
To determine the contribution of mucin carbohydrates to the integrity of the mucosal barrier.
